Four minutes and twelve seconds: The incredibly churlish “Middle Of The Road” was how Lawrence, formerly of indiepop classicists Felt, introduced his Denim project to the world. Two minutes of morose rejection of rock history, a manifesto of sorts mid-song, then a build to the song’s banner-waving coda, a mix of the Glitter Band and “Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep”. This section is the payoff: the song has to work credibly as glam rock or it would just be trolling, albeit rather enjoyable trolling - cf Lawrence’s superbly flattened disdain on words like “riffs” and “licks”.
What would your 4’12” track be?
